2019 Skin Care Trend - Replaces Retinol With A Natural Alternative
By Timeless Organics
Is There a Replacement for the Anti-Aging Holy Grail?
Retinol, the magical skin care ingredient has been written about and talked about for years touting its benefits of smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, fading dark spots, tightening pores and restoring skin to its youthful smooth and soft appearance. Retinol is found in a variety of night creams due to its adverse effects on skin if used in sunlight. In addition to issues with sunlight, retinol may cause irritation and excessive drying.
Enter the new magical skin care ingredient that delivers similar rewards as retinol with the added beauty of being a natural alternative from the seeds and leaves of the babchi plant known as bakuchiol (pronounced – back-uh-heel). Bakuchiol has been used in Chinese and Indian restorative medicine for many years.
According to NYC dermatologists, bakuchiol is a compound that offers anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties that are similar to retinol without the adverse side effects. Like retinol, bakuchiol works to turn over skin cells bringing new skin cells and collagen to the skin’s surface for more elastic and younger looking skin.
A study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science compared retinol to bakuchiol and found that bakuchiol had all the benefits of retinol without the adverse side effects and is effective for all skin types.
As with all skin care ingredients, results and reactions vary from person to person. Dermatologists state that if you can tolerate retinol, there is no reason to switch; however, if you have issues with retinol then bakuchiol is a great choice. Bakuchiol can also be used with retinol to boost the effects.
The Verdict Is In
As the results of bakuchiol are very promising, some dermatologists believe more clinical studies need to be done before determining if this ingredient should totally replace retinol and some believe in this natural skin care renewing ingredient and suggest using it in the morning and evening as part of a regular skin care regimen.
As with any new skin care product or ingredient, you should test it on your skin. As it is a plant derivative, there may be people that have an allergic or sensitive reaction to it just as they might with any other plant - based product. Before adding any new ingredient to your skin, if you have reservations consult with your dermatologist to be sure it is right for you.
